What Is The Funding & Where Does It Come From?
ECO4 and GBIS Funding
The GBIS and ECO4 schemes are British government-backed initiatives designed to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in UK homes. Both schemes offer financial incentives to homeowners, tenants and landlords who install energy-saving measures like insulation, new boilers, and solar panels. While they share a common goal, there are some key differences between the two schemes.
GBIS, or the Great British Insulation Scheme, is a more general term used to describe government-backed initiatives aimed at improving home insulation. ECO4, on the other hand, is a specific government program that provides funding for various energy efficiency upgrades such as smart heating controls, heat pumps, new central heating systems and solar panels.
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)
The Great British Insulation Scheme is a new government energy efficiency scheme (formerly known as ECO+) administered by Ofgem. It is designed to deliver improvements to the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills. You could save over £400 a year on your energy bills!
The GBIS scheme complements the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, yet unlike ECO4’s ‘whole house’ approach, this scheme will mostly deliver single insulation measures.
GBIS Eligibility
- You’re on qualifying benefits (see the section below), and you are a homeowner with an EPC rating of D to G
- OR you privately rent your home and have an EPC of D or E.
- OR you are a homeowner and have an EPC rating of D or lower and a council tax band of A to D in England and A to E in both Wales and Scotland.
- OR your annual household income is less than £31,000
- OR a household member has been identified by an NHS doctor or GP as vulnerable, due to having a health condition that may be impacted by living in a cold home. This includes conditions such as heart disease, respiratory problems, weakened immune systems, or limited mobility.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) Scheme
The ECO4 scheme is the fourth phase of the UK government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative, designed to help homeowners and tenants improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Launched in April 2022, ECO4 focuses on supporting low-income households and those at risk of fuel poverty by providing funding for energy-saving measures, such as insulation, heating improvements, and renewable energy installations such as free solar panels for your home.
